In the Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author depicts different characters to carry out this task and give the book a more in-depth meaning than the Protagonists. In doing this he is capable of using an outcast, a community leader, and a religious clergyman giving them a different role in the story to convey his message to the reader. One of the characters used in telling the story to give a deeper meaning is Mistree Hibbins. Mistress Hibbins is looked at as an outcast in the eyes of the townspeople.
